EDUCATIONCOVID-19: Schools could still reopen January – FGPublished on January 12, 2021 By Ifreke Inyang

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has said schools in the country will resume on January 18, until the Ministry of Education announces further directive.

PTF National Coordinator, Dr Sani Aliyu, stated this while featuring on TVC on Tuesday.

Just yesterday, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said the Federal Government would review the January 18 date which was fixed for resumption of schools across Nigeria.

However, Aliyu clarified that Adamu did not say the date has been changed.

Aliyu said, “As regards schools, I just want to make a clarification, what the minister said yesterday was that they were going to review, he didn’t say that they were going to change the date. He said they will review the situation and let the nation know.

“So, for the moment, it is still 18th January until the Ministry of Education comes back either with an alternative date or reconfirms that.”

The PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, had listed reopening of schools as one of the reasons why COVID-19 numbers have spiked.

EDUCATIONFederal varsity Gusau: SSANU NASU demostrate over minimum wage, arrears, others in ZamfaraPublished 38 mins ago on January 12, 2021 By Ifeanyi Nwannah
The Joint Action Committee of Senior staff Associations of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), Federal University Gusau wing, Tuesday, embarked on a peaceful protest over non-implementation of IPPIS, minimum wage, and arrears by the federal government.

Addressing newsmen after the protest in Gusau, the Chairman of the Joint Task Committee of NASU and SSANU, Malam Mudassir Musa explained that the non seriousness shown by the federal government has affected their work in the last one year.

Musa said that several official letters have been served to the federal government, National Universities Commission and other relevant authorities on their demand but all to no avail.

“What we are demanding from the Federal Government to implement include, paying our minimum wage, arrears, correcting IPPIS irregularities, and paying their outstanding earned allowances from February last year to date but we don’t know why we are being neglected without listening to our clarion appeals” he lamented.

According to him, many staff of the University have been denied their monthly salary since February 2020 due to IPPS.

“From the beginning of the IPPIS Programme, which the Federal government asked us to register our names in January last year to date, our staff have not been receiving their Salaries despite several calls by our two unions to the Federal government yet no reason reasonable has been given for not implementing our rights.”

The workers spokesman also called on the federal government to as a matter of urgency come to their rescue especially by implementing the IPPIS, minimum wage arrears and other promises made to them.

Addressing the protesters, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-Charge of Administration, Dr. Ahmad Galadima, sympathized with them over their grievances and promised that their demand will be channel to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.

Oyo State chapter of Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has said that Monday’s indefinite strike embarked upon by workers at the Polytechnic Ibadan has exposed the deceit in the government of Engineer Seyi Makinde.

SPN made this disclosure via a statement made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

The party in the statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Ayodeji Adigun called on leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state to support the striking workers at the institution.

DAILY POST recalls that both academic and non-academic staff in the institution had yesterday declared an indefinite strike.

Our correspondent gathered that the strike action follows the non-implementation of the new minimum wage.

But, SPN in its reaction, maintained that the ongoing strike has no doubt further showed that the claim of the implementation of the new minimum wage by Engr Seyi Makinde-led government for all categories of civil servants in the State is deceptive.

The party also expressed its support to the ongoing indefinite strike.

“The strike is in connection with the continued failure of the Engr Seyi Makinde-led government in the state to commence the implementation of the new minimum wage of N30, 000 for workers in the institution, more than a year after it was signed into law by the Buhari-led federal government. Another issue involved in the strike is the overreaching and unlawful activities of the consultant imposed on the institution by the state government.

“SPN decries this kind of repressive response from the Engr Seyi Makinde-led government that often claims to be a people-friendly government, therefore demands an immediate withdrawal of the men of Operation Burst so as to avert unnecessary complications and escalation of the issue.

“Given this background, SPN calls on the Engr Seyi Makinde-led government to stop all its gimmick to divide and weaken workers’ resolve and accedes to all of their demands without further delay. At the same time, SPN urges the striking workers to remain resolute and undaunted as we strongly believe that all of their demands are achievable only if they can remain determined and steadfast.

“Beyond this is to note that, the ongoing strike of the polytechnic Ibadan workers have no doubt further showed that the claim of the implementation of the new minimum wage by Engr Seyi Makinde-led government for all categories of civil servants in the State is not only sectional but also deceptive.

“This has again underscored the SPN standpoint that most of the so-called achievements of Engr Seyi Makinde-led government are largely for the purpose of grandstanding and propaganda!”
