US Makes $20,000 Visa Bond Mandatory for Nigerians, Other Travellers The United States has made its visa bond programme permanent, requiring certain travellers from 50 countries, including Nigeria and 29 other African nations, to pay a refundable visa bond of up to $20,000 before obtaining selected US visas. According to a notice issued by the US Department of State, the requirement applies to some applicants seeking B1/B2 business and tourist visas who are directed by a consular officer to provide the bond as a condition for visa issuance. The department stated that the policy, which began as a pilot programme in 2025, has proven effective in improving compliance with US immigration laws. Travellers who obey the terms of their visas and leave the United States within the approved period will have their bonds fully refunded. The US government noted that the measure is intended to strengthen immigration compliance and reduce visa overstays among affected travellers.
